The Biggest Loser vs. Meal Plans 101 -- a lesson for us all?

It’s January 15th and New Year’s Resolutions are likely starting to fade—we’re not being negative, just stating the facts from surveys that are done with 1000’s across the world. One thing that we keep hearing from our clients is that they are watching the Biggest Loser on TV and wondering how these people are losing 20+ pounds in ONE week (for the record, many contestants lost zero or actually gained the second week). And, while some may laugh, I am a closet Biggest Loser fan—it’s hard not to be, when we know there will questions about this from clients. But really, how realistic is it to lock people away in a house for 3 months with access to a personal trainer and calorie controlled diet competing for $250,000? Convenient for those contestants, but not everyone has that luxury. With that said, it still does take hard work and dedication, so we’re not taking that away from the contestants!

We do like that they really do some intense exercise—enough with this lully gagging around and tiptoeing around the issue. Here are a few lessons learned from the Biggest Loser, that I think can apply to all of us.

• “To get what we’ve never had, we must do what we’ve never done.” To see great change, you need to stretch yourself. Test your limits and see what you are made of.

• People get a lot of satisfaction out of testing their limits. Sure, that sedentary office job and 4 BR, 2.5 bath house is nice and comfortable. But it’s not challenging. You don’t wake up every day with a fire underneath you to push yourself farther. So people end up with “Middle syndrome.” Middle age with a Paunchy Middle and a Middle of the Road Income. No wonder many have a Mid-Life Crisis.

• The body and our mind can handle A LOT. We adapt. We grow stronger. Our minds are tougher than we ever realize. Just because we tend to cry “Uncle” early on, doesn’t mean we have to.

• Hard work is inspirational. Cowardice is not.

How can you have success like those contestants on the Biggest Loser? We’re not encouraging a 22+ weight loss in one week, but what are those contestants doing that you can learn from?

1. They are eating a calorie controlled diet. Not sure where to start mealplans101 will solve that problem.
2. They are exercising at a high intensity. Try doing something different—cut down the rest between your sets, try jumping rope between sets, picking up the pace during your walks, or if you run, try sprinting for short periods of time.
So today ask yourself how you could stretch yourself in 2008, and then make consistent steps to follow through. Talk about Transformational!
