Do you eat to live…

Or live to eat?

It’s still early in the beach season, but are you beach body ready or still embarrassed to take of your shirt to bare show off your physique?  When I was in my teens, there was a time when I would go to the beach and leave my shirt on the entire time; I was horrified of what I looked like underneath that shirt. Rather than make change early on, I thought I could hide behind a t-shirt.  Not so.  And it didn’t take long before I realized what it took to change my body. 

It takes effort.

It takes dedication.

It takes motivation.

It takes smart exercise.

And, of course, the right nutrition. 

But it doesn’t require unattainable steps in your life that can’t be maintained – we encourage lifestyle changes that can be made permanent. 

Quick fixes work as well as playing the slot machines to get rich – the chance of success is slim to none, even though people continue to try!

These 10 tips will help get you in the shape of your life, to attain the body of your dreams – even before the summer is over.  The key is to start now and not delay.

  1. Eliminate all liquid calories from your diet, outside of low fat milk and a post workout drink.
  2. Get more sleep!  More and more research continues to emerge suggesting that the less you sleep, the heavier you are.  Aim for at least 8 hours each night.
  3. Eat more fruits and vegetables – in fact, try replacing 90% of all carbohydrates in your diet with fruits and vegetables.  Is it challenging?  Sure.  Everything worthwhile is.
  4. Plan ahead – if you fail to plan, plan to fail.  Meal Plans 101 can handle this for you.
  5. Make time for exercise.  There are no more excuses or wasted time.  It doesn’t take hours to get a great workout – in fact, the harder you work, the shorter your workouts can be.  So ramp up that intensity.  Walking your dog is great, but it’s not going to do the job!

  9. Earn your carbs and your calories – carbs are fantastic for you, when you exercise.  And the more you move, the more you need.  Wouldn’t you rather earn more food by exercising?  Deprivation is not the way to shed fat and look or feel good! 
  10. Learn to read food labels – seemingly “healthy” foods are often loaded with sugar, fat, and ingredients you likely can’t pronounce.  Only eat foods with less than 5 ingredients.  Up for the challenge?  Here are some hints to get you started: apples, carrots, bananas, blueberries, wild salmon, 100% rolled oats, chicken breast, spinach, omega-3 fortified eggs, oat bran, quinoa, etc.  None of those have more than 1 ingredient – and every one is loaded with powerful nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.
